Water Pump Service Video

The water pump is the component that circulates coolant through your engine and radiator. Driven by a belt or the timing chain, its impeller moves coolant through the block, head, and heater core so heat has somewhere to go.

This video walks through where the pump sits on the engine and how the impeller spins whenever the engine runs. It also shows what the housing looks like once a seal starts weeping. In normal operation, the pump pulls cooled fluid out of the radiator and pushes it back through the engine on a continuous loop.

Wear usually shows up as a whine or grinding noise from the front of the engine, which points to a tired bearing. A crusty pink, green, or orange residue below the pump means the shaft seal has started to leak coolant past the housing.

An inspection checks for shaft play at the pulley and looks for seepage at the weep hole. It also pressure-tests the cooling system so a leaking hose or thermostat housing is not mistaken for a failing pump. When testing confirms the pump itself, our cooling, AC, and heating system repair service covers the full replacement.

The dry summer heat around Moses Lake and Ephrata keeps underhood temperatures high for long stretches. That sustained heat hardens the pump’s seal until it can no longer hold coolant against the spinning shaft.

If you hear a whine from the front of the engine or spot coolant on the driveway, call Affordable Automotive Services at (509) 764-0000. You can also visit your mechanic in Moses Lake to schedule an inspection.
