Catalytic Converter Service Video

The catalytic converter is part of the exhaust and helps clean gases before they leave the tailpipe. A coated core turns carbon monoxide, raw fuel, and nitrogen oxides into less harmful gases once the unit is hot enough to work.

This video shows where the part sits under the car, how exhaust flows through it, and what the coated core does. It also shows why tests must find the cause before a new part is installed.

Warning signs may include a rattle under the car, an odd exhaust smell, low power, high heat, or a check engine light. A P0420 code means the car found low catalyst output, but the code alone does not prove the unit has failed. An exhaust leak, bad sensor, misfire, or fuel-control fault may affect the same test.

Short trips in Moses Lake can slow warm up, most of all after a cold start, though that alone does not prove damage. A misfire or rich fuel mix can send raw fuel into the exhaust and harm the coated core over time.

Affordable Automotive Services can check the exhaust, review sensor data, and test for engine faults that may harm the unit. When tests confirm damage or low catalyst output, review our catalytic converter repair and replacement service for the full repair process.
