Ignition Coil Service Video
An ignition coil steps the battery's 12 volts up to the tens of thousands needed to fire a spark plug. Most modern engines use one coil per cylinder, so a single failure kills spark on that cylinder alone.
This video shows where the coils sit and what a cracked housing reveals once a coil is pulled. It also shows a failing coil on a scope, which explains why a misfire feels the way it does.
A misfire code between P0301 and P0308 points to a specific cylinder, often appearing only once the engine is hot. A flashing check engine light under hard acceleration means the misfire is severe enough to risk the catalytic converter.
An inspection swaps the suspect coil to another cylinder while a scan tool watches live misfire data. If the misfire follows the coil, the coil is at fault, and if it stays put, the plug or injector is next. When testing confirms a bad coil, our tune-up service explains the full process.
Grant County's summer heat cycles and cold winter starts stress coil insulation until it cracks. A coil that works when warm may not fire a cold, fuel-rich cylinder on a frosty morning.
