Serpentine Belt Service Video

The serpentine belt is a single ribbed belt that winds across the front of the engine. It drives the alternator, power steering pump, water pump, and air conditioning compressor. One belt handles accessory power for the whole engine, which is why its condition matters more than its small size suggests.

This video walks through how the belt routes around the pulleys and what the tensioner does to keep it tight. It also shows what a worn belt looks like once the ribs start to crack. In normal operation, the tensioner holds steady pressure while the belt spins quietly through every pulley on the accessory drive.

Wear shows up in a few consistent ways. A chirping or squealing noise at startup usually points to a glazed belt slipping on a pulley. Visible cracks across the ribs, missing chunks, or a shiny glazed surface mean the rubber has aged past its useful life.

An inspection looks at the ribs for cracking, checks the tensioner for weak spring pressure, and verifies the pulleys spin true without wobble. When the belt or tensioner needs to be replaced, our drive belt replacement service handles the full job.

Serpentine belts take a real beating around Moses Lake, where dry summer heat and winter cold harden the rubber. The ribs lose flexibility and begin to crack. Drivers across Ephrata and Quincy see the same pattern.

If you hear a chirp from the front of the engine or spot cracks on the belt, call Affordable Automotive Services at (509) 764-0000. You can also visit your Moses Lake auto shop to book an inspection.
