EGR Valve Service Video

The EGR valve routes a measured amount of exhaust gas back into the intake to lower combustion temperatures and cut NOx. This video compares a clogged EGR valve with a clean one and shows where the valve sits on gas and diesel engines. It also explains the diagnostic trouble codes that a failing EGR valve may trigger.

Service starts with a scan and a check of the valve's actual position against what the engine computer commands. A sticking valve reports one thing and does another, which sets codes like P0401, P0404, and P0406. On diesels, the EGR cooler and intake runners are inspected too, because carbon rarely stops at the valve.

A check engine light with EGR codes is the clearest sign, often with rough idle at a stoplight or hesitation off the line. Diesel owners usually notice lost power and more exhaust smoke first. If the codes come and go, check engine light diagnostics confirm whether the valve, wiring, or control signal is at fault.

Cold Grant County starts and long warm-up idles leave soot that the valve never gets hot enough to burn off. Short trips make it worse since the deposits compound a little more with every drive.

Affordable Automotive Services removes the valve and bench-tests it to see whether it still actuates cleanly. The intake ports behind it are scraped and cleaned before the valve goes back in. EGR work is part of our exhaust system repair services.

If the valve still responds after cleaning, cleaning is the right call. A pitted pintle or a solenoid that no longer holds position means replacement is the only durable fix. Either way, the work is backed by our 5-year / 50,000-mile parts and labor warranty.

Diesel trucks see the heaviest buildup, since their exhaust carries more soot than a gas engine's. That makes an EGR check worth adding to routine diesel service rather than waiting for a code.
