Power Steering Pump Service Video

The power steering pump is a belt-driven hydraulic pump that pressurizes fluid in your steering system. That pressurized fluid is what makes turning the wheel feel light instead of fighting the full weight of the front tires.

This video walks through where the pump sits on the engine and how the belt spins the internal vanes. It also shows how fluid moves from the reservoir through the pump to the steering rack. In normal operation the pump holds steady pressure every time the wheel turns, hot or cold.

Wear usually shows up in the ear and in the wheel. A whine or groan that rises with engine speed points to a worn pump. Heavy or uneven effort when turning at low speeds often means pressure is dropping. Pink fluid pooled under the front of the car is another sign.

Inspection checks pump pressure against the manufacturer specification and looks for shaft seal weepage. It also verifies the fluid is clean and at the correct level before anything is condemned. When testing confirms the pump is the source, our power steering repair service covers the full repair.

Long highway runs between Moses Lake and Ephrata keep the pump cycling under sustained load. Heat soak in the pump housing hardens the shaft seal until it starts to leak.
